Albania (May Have) Just Killed Its Digital Nomad Visa

There are two ways to kill a digital nomad visa.

The first is to pull the plug on it. It’s a quick, effective death, and it’s straightforward. Those interested in applying must go elsewhere.

The second way is to start messing with the tax structure. One selling point for some nations is visiting digital nomads will not have to pay a local tax. Now, if you’re reading this and you’re from the United States, you will always have to pay Uncle Sam, so it’s not giving you some out on paying taxes. It just means you won’t have to deal with filing an additional return.

Albania quickly became a favorite for those looking to live in Europe without dealing with paying local taxes. If you were to move to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and others, you would pay a local tax, and while all of the listed nations have a tax treaty with the U.S., it would still require the headache of filing international taxes, not to mention adding more paperwork to your U.S. return.

In Albania, that wasn’t something you’d have to do.

At least, until now.

Up until April of 2024, the tax structure was that if you earned around $150,000 or less…
