Fernet and Coke — The Worst South American National Beverage
Argentina had so many other options. It settled on the worst.
Argentina is known for many things. Steak, wine, tango, Eva (as played by Madonna).
But one thing the country isn’t known for is its national beverage. While surrounding nations have beverages based entirely on their unique place in the world, Argentina leans into a cocktail that’s made with an Italian spirit and an American soda.
In a way, it’s the nation’s retort to Jack and Coke, though to my taste buds, I’d take a Jack and Coke any day of the week, though in all honesty I’m not a fan of sugary mixed cocktails (post college, anything with sugar puts me down with a weeklong hangover).
As I’m winding my time down in Buenos Aires, I wanted to share some last minute items before I leave, including this drink. As, unless you’re in San Francisco or Miami, it’s probably not available at your local bar, it’s at least interesting to look at. So, enjoy my little video on Argentina’s Fernet and Coke (because the best way to enjoy the drink is to be the one not drinking it).
