Ha, I laughed when you mentioned When Stella Got Her Groove Back. But you're spot on. There are dozens of movies glorifying women going to Europe or Brazil and falling in love with a local (heck, a good portion of travel memoirs are like that as well). It's romanticized. Flip it and men are considered creeps. I recently asked a Colombian friend what she thought when people say "men are just going to the country to save the poor and uneducated local women." I can't actually repeat what she said, otherwise I'm liable to get kicked off the platform...let's just say she does not agree. The reality is, the vast majority of these women are not being taken advantage of, and are extremely offended when told they are.
