I HATE asking people what they do. I'll never bring it up. I feel, especially in the US, people define one another based on what they do. Which is exactly why I avoid it.

And I'm glad you added #6. That was a big thing with my family growing up. You never, ever, talked about how much things cost. Leaving a price sticker on a Christmas gift was like the worst thing you could do.
