I think it depends on what you classify as privilege. Would you rather be born in Italy, receive free college, and then have the opportunity to move elsewhere debt free, or would you rather be born in the US, be saddled with massive college debt (for a similar degree) and then be able to get a job elsewhere? I'd argue the vast majority of Europeans are better off. Heck, I know loads of people from South America that received free college, then moved to Spain. No debt. I might have the easier ability to land a job, but in terms of being better off, I'm well behind both groups.
As I suggested in the article, US is pay to play. If I didn't have to pay for college things would be different. But I did. A lot. So privilege, from my point of view? Not so much.
