I think the only other monuments I think are similar in emotional weight that I've seen are holocaust memories (specifically ones around children). Your second point is spot on...violence in the U.S. is a pandemic in of itself. I wish I had better answers to give in how to at least reduce the numbers. I'd say we have politicians to figure that out...but they're a major part of the problem.
