Like most cities/countries it has its own problems, but it's waaaay safer than what you'd think based on all the TV programs (most locals hate all the narco/cartel television shows because it's basically taking a bad time period of the 80s/90s and constantly bringing it back up). Guns aren't really an issue. Just personally I never felt unsafe, although of course there are certain cities and areas of town I wouldn't walk around at night.
