Medium is Censoring Writers, Forcing Many to Leave the Platform

There were a lot of “Big Changes” in 2024. Most of them were duds.

The “Boost Program.” Or, more aptly put, the downfall of Medium.

I had issues with the program from the get-go. At the time, I saw it as a way for publication editors to self-promote their own articles and receive significant financial compensation for it. I thought the conflict of interest would lead to problems, because naturally, if it came down to two articles, one by the publication editors, the other by a random author, they’d pick their own article for “boosting.”

My views on the matter have not changed, though in my shortsightedness I didn’t see the bigger problem right in front of my face.

That the Boost Program would censor writers.

Since the launch of the Boost Program, revenue from non-boosted articles has dropped significantly. Those numbers have entirely dropped off a cliff in recent months. There are some articles I know won’t receive a boost, but I enjoy writing on the topic, as do many of my subscribers, and, over time, those articles would earn enough to make it worth writing another one.

Now, those same articles struggle to clear a buck.
