Why not buy that flight without spending any of your own money?

I like to say moving abroad isn’t expensive. It costs a plane ticket.

Now, okay, there are some nuances to this. If you’re moving with a family that’s going to cost more. If you have plans on shipping your belongings, that’s also going to add up. And, if you really want to ship your vehicle? Well, beyond me waving and yelling, “Don’t!”, that’s going to cost possibly more than the car itself.

Me saying it costs only a plane ticket is based on you, packing up what you can in some suitcases, and moving to a new country to rent out either a temporary Airbnb (I try to avoid these at all costs, but sometimes that’s not possible), or a local apartment.

That local apartment will almost always cost less than what you’re paying in the U.S. So, you simply take whatever you would have paid for rent (or your mortgage) back in the States and use it as rent in your new home.

Most of your other expenses will be lower in your newfound home. And the amount of money you save goes up exponentially if you no longer have a vehicle (car payments and insurance are bonkers these days).

So, if you only move with whatever you can pack, it really only costs a plane ticket.
