The family thing I 100% understand. I'd never fault anyone for remaining around for family. My grandmother recently decided to move from all her friends to be in a state with her daughter and grandkids. She said at her age, family is what is most important.
And absolutely, "USA #1" is hammered into our heads. And we're also given a selective world view/history lesson. Whenever I travel/move somewhere I make sure to do as much historical reading as I can. It's really an eye opener (and unfortunate that the history taught in schools is so selective). Maybe the US would be more open to making improvements if it was more open to accepting its historical faults.
