Totally. Tasting menus can be fun...I think it's probably better experienced with someone (I went alone) or in a group. Especially with something like this where you're not totally sure what you're eating. It can be a bit exhausting though. It's a dozen or more little bites over the course of maybe two hours.
And yeah, tasting menus are usually exclusive to super duper posh restaurants and found in very large cities. So, in the US, unless you're close to a major city, it's not an option. BUT! You could just do your own little tasting menu with friends by going to a spot that has tapas or a bunch of finger food/appetizers (at least you'd know you were eating fried mushrooms instead of, well, whatever it was I ate).
