Unfortunately, this is exactly what I assumed would happen once the additional 70 countries were added to the program.

Spam would go up, as would AI, and article thieving (someone was even using my avatar with similar spelling name to post a spam phone number on comments).

Hopefully it is cleaned up, because I know of many top performing writers who have all but abandoned Medium in the past few months (though the spam is only a partial reason behind this).
