You Won’t Always Fit In, And That’s Okay
Lessons from abroad.
I wouldn’t say I’m a full-blown introvert. As someone who grabbed my dogs and moved to another country I don’t think I would check off the necessary boxes. And yet I’m not the life of the party. I’m fine hanging out with one or two people at a time.
I’m also fine without an abundance of friends. A good friend here or there and I’m set. And while I’m not someone that needs attention, I’ve generally found I can connect on a personal level and make friends.
At least until I moved to Argentina (specifically Buenos Aires). While people are friendly, there’s a difference between friendly and becoming friends. I made friends while living in Peru, and have done so when visiting most South American countries, yet for whatever reason, I just didn’t vibe with the local porteños. For the longes time I beat myself up over it. I mean, going months without in-person conversations (beyond talking with dogs) can weigh on you.
It took a while to accept the situation, which is why it is so important to understand if you ever decide to move, whether it’s to another country or to another city, you won’t always fit in, and that’s okay. We jive with some people, and don’t with others.
That’s just how it is.
